Midas Homes at Duporth

Midas Homes have a good development of homes on the coast just outside of St Austell, at Duporth. The development is called Two Coves. St Austell isn't a great holiday rental town but it is a very useful place to be based near to and the very attractive coastline is just a 5 minute drive away.

This will be a pretty estate and would be a good bet for those looking for a family home for holiday rental. The development is on the coast between Mevagissey and Fowey, and you can walk from the houses down to a quiet, small beach, through a wood.

The picturesque harbour of Charlestown (above), and the beach at Porthpean (below), are close by.

The site's show home has just completed and will be open from 31 May.

St Ives and Carbis Bay

St Ives is a relatively small town and the number of new developments is limited.

These are the main current or recent developments.

Chy an More - St Ives, Carbis Bay - Miller Countrywide
Seawinds - St Ives - Bradleys St Ives
Sands - Carbis Bay, St Ives
Higher Trewiden Road - St Ives - Bradleys St Ives
Oceanis, Belyars Lane - St Ives - Bradleys St Ives
Pednolver Terrace - St Ives - Bradleys St Ives

Self catering in St Ives is looking better and better. Sands at Carbis Bay, in particular, is a fabulous development.

Newquay holiday apartments and houses

There is a lot of building going on in Newquay. File that under 'understatement'.

From the tip of the Pentire round to Watergate Bay the number of cranes and fenced-off plots is eye opening. Most are old hotels, long past their sell-by date, a number are large family homes. All are making way for new build apartments and houses.

These are the developments I know about that are being developed or have completed in the last 12 months or so:

Pentire
  • Spinnakers
  • Vista
  • Pentire Mews
  • Ocean 1
  • Ocean Gate
  • Trehellan Heights
Central
  • Rocklands
  • Horizons
  • Surfpods 1 and 2
  • Tolcarne
  • Harbour View
  • The Point
  • Carn Brae
  • Shore 504
  • Crest Court
  • Scape
  • The Old Edwardian
Headland
  • Azure
  • Zinc
  • Pearl
  • Bredon Court
Porth
  • Zenith
  • The Beach House
Watergate
  • Tregurrian
I also know of 3 or 4 others that are soon to come to market and the local developers, Penpol, also have a large number of sites sat fallow at the moment.
If you are looking to buy then the main agents representing these properties are: Bradleys, Webbers, Knight Frank, Stags, Strutt and Parker, David Ball.

The apartments generally aren't cheap and there has been a fair bit of backlash from locals, many of whom see developments as destroying the Newquay skyline and pricing local people out of the market. However, many of these are replacing outdated bedspaces with top quality bedspaces, hopefully attracting a higher spending visitor to Newquay and the Newquay skyline is not, in the most part, a thing of beauty. Newquay holidays have generally been a bucket and spade affair; there is now a real focus from the council on raising the bar and this is reflected in the amenities becoming available in the town. The properties have high asking prices and therefore owners are looking for high rentals. The town needs to attract higher spenders - by becoming the Cornwall location of discerning choice - to sustain the development.

All this development is clearly going to greatly increase the choice for those looking for quality self catering in Newquay.

Newquay

We were over in Newquay again today. There is so much happening there and it's been a big news story for a year or two now. It's a great town on its way to reinventing itself as one of the destinations of choice in the South West for the discerning visitor - as long as it can improve on the quality level of its facilities and shake off the party capital image.

The shot to the left is from the new Rocklands development. It's perched on the edge of the cliff overlooking Tolcarne Beach. The views from the sea-facing apartments are jaw-dropping and the finish quality really is second to none - a landmark development for Newquay. We have been working hard on our portfolio to enable guests to enjoy high quality Newquay holidays and would hope to add some of these to the portfolio. They are available through Stags and Webbers.

Newquay has such a lot going on that I will try and find some time over the next day or two to put down thoughts on all the developments going on.
